Insurance Repairs

Your rights, the process, and how we help

How Insurance Vehicle Repairs Work

After an accident, dealing with insurance can feel overwhelming. There's paperwork, phone calls, engineers, and a lot of jargon designed to make the process confusing. This guide explains how insurance repairs actually work, what your rights are, and how CPRS Grimsby can take the stress out of the whole thing.

Your Right to Choose Your Repairer

This is the single most important thing to know: you have the legal right to choose who repairs your vehicle. Your insurer will almost certainly suggest their own "Approved Repairer" network, but you are under no obligation to use them.

Insurance-approved repair centres work to targets and budgets set by the insurer, not by you. They are often incentivised to complete work as cheaply and quickly as possible. By choosing an independent repairer like CPRS, you ensure the repair is done to the highest standard — because we answer to you, not the insurance company.

Non-Fault vs Fault Claims

Non-Fault Claims

If someone else caused the accident, it's a non-fault claim. This means:

  • The at-fault driver's insurer should cover all repair costs
  • You should not have to pay your excess
  • Your No Claims Discount should be protected
  • You may be entitled to a courtesy car for the duration of the repair

Many drivers don't realise this and claim on their own policy by default, which can put their NCD at risk and cost them their excess. At CPRS, we manage non-fault claims directly with the at-fault party's insurer, protecting your interests throughout.

Fault Claims

If you were at fault (or liability is shared), you'll need to claim on your own comprehensive policy. This typically means:

  • You pay your policy excess upfront
  • Your insurer covers the remaining repair costs
  • Your No Claims Discount may be affected (unless you have NCD protection)

Even with a fault claim, you still have the right to choose CPRS as your repairer. We submit our assessment directly to your insurer and handle the authorisation process.

Common Insurance Repair Questions

Do I have to use the garage my insurer recommends?

No. You have the legal right to choose who repairs your vehicle after an accident. Your insurer cannot refuse to cover reasonable repair costs just because you chose your own garage. Insurers often direct you to their approved network to cut their own costs — not to get you the best result.

What's the difference between a fault and non-fault claim?

A non-fault claim means someone else caused the accident. Their insurer should cover all costs, and your No Claims Discount should be protected. A fault claim means you were responsible (or liability is shared). Your own comprehensive policy covers the repair, minus your excess.

Will making a claim affect my No Claims Discount?

For non-fault claims managed correctly, your NCD should not be affected. For fault claims, it typically will — but many policies offer NCD protection. We help manage non-fault claims in a way that protects your bonus.

Do I have to pay my excess upfront?

For fault claims on your own policy, yes — you'll usually need to pay your excess. For non-fault claims, you should not have to pay any excess, as the at-fault driver's insurer covers the full cost. We manage this process for you.

How long does an insurance repair take?

It depends on the damage and how quickly the insurer authorises the repair. Minor cosmetic work can take a few days. Major structural repairs may take longer. The biggest variable is usually the insurer's response time — we push for fast authorisation and keep you informed throughout.

Can I choose CPRS for a motorhome or caravan insurance repair?

Yes. Your right to choose your repairer applies to all vehicle types — cars, vans, motorhomes, caravans, and commercial vehicles. We have specialist experience repairing all of these and regularly handle insurance claims for non-standard vehicles.
